How to Encourage Friendship Between Your Dog and Your Cat

Bringing a new puppy home is the start of an exciting adventure, but introducing them to the rest of your family presents challenges that any pet owner must meet to encourage harmony in the home. One of the most difficult introductions will be the inevitable first meeting between your new dog and your cat. While these beloved pets are famous for their conflicts, thanks in no small part to influential depictions in popular culture, there are numerous ways to ensure that dogs and cats can grow up in a shared space and become the best of friends.

With the right training in a safe environment, you can also encourage harmony between your pets and ensure a happy household for both of them.

Separating When Necessary

The key to ensuring that your puppy and cat feel safe in a shared home is for each of them to have their own safe spaces away from one another. Although this may sound counterintuitive given that the mission is to teach them to be friendly with one another, it is in fact a vital part of the process. Each animal needs their own space that they can retreat to when their meetings become overwhelming.

Cats love to climb, and they feel safe when they’re elevated high enough for them to reach their perch easily, while staying out of the dog’s reach. Dogs, some breeds more than others, like to chase cats around the house. Puppies especially enjoy this, as they’re in their most curious stage of life. A cat tree will give your cat room to escape to safety when your new puppy becomes too rambunctious.

Sometimes, however, your animals need their own rooms to truly feel secure. Cats and dogs each need their own food and water bowls, and your cat needs a safe route to get to their litter box. Dog gates will likewise help to protect the dog’s space from inquisitive cats. Affording your pets their own spaces will allow them to calm down separately if playtime gets too rough and will reduce each animal’s overall anxiety.

Give Dogs and Cats Scent Access

Dogs and cats both have powerful senses of smell, and this sense is vital to any introduction between not only the two species, but members of their own species, as well. Allowing them to smell each other before putting them in the same space will go a long way in familiarizing them ahead of time. For example, allow your dog to smell your cat’s bedding and vice versa. This will allow them to get used to the idea of sharing their home by taking advantage of their sharpest senses.

Scent exchange can also safely be done while keeping the animals separate. Placing a wall or doorway between them will give each animal an opportunity to smell the other more clearly without necessitating unguarded contact. Placing each of their food sources on the same floor with a door or wall between them may assist with this part of the process.

Meeting Face to Face for the First Time

Once your dog and cat are finally aware of each other’s presence in the home, it’s time to introduce them to the concept of a shared space. To ensure that you’re doing this safely, keep your dog on a leash to prevent them from intruding on the cat’s personal space. Trapping the cat will only make them feel cornered, however, and cut off the cat’s escape routes in the process, which will increase anxiety and hostility.

Face-to-face meetings between animals that don’t get along yet should be managed carefully and kept relatively brief. This process may be a gradual one, but with repetition, your dog and cat will begin to expect these meetings, and their anxiety around one another should decrease over time.
