Owning a Chihuahua is Loving a Chihuahua

When you take home your new Chihuahua, you’re taking home a lot of love in a tiny package- so there are a few things to know. First, know that your Chihuahua will love and respect you, even when you discipline him. You must teach the dog that you are the alpha, in your daily routines. If your Chi eats after you eat, and walks behind you, he will learn that you are in control and that you are superior. Everything else after that is easy, because he respects you.

Chi pups are territorial by nature, and they feel a lot bigger than they actually are- so they can be a bit defensive. When you begin to socialize them, do it outside of their home, so they don’t feel threatened.

Chihuahuas make great companion dogs; they are loyal and full of life. They love giving and receiving attention, and will love you unconditionally for their entire lives.

Chihuahuas are typically good with children, as long as the kids are calm and gentle with the puppy. Make sure, when a youngster is holding the puppy, that he or she firmly supports the Chi’s hind legs- as holding them by just the torso is painful and dangerous.

Chi pups range from six to ten pounds, so it’s important to be careful with them- as they’ll always be tiny.

These dogs are independent, so potty training may take a while- but if you’re strict with it, they will be impressively obedient. Avoid puppy-training bathroom pads, as chis love to chew those.

Your Chihuahua doesn’t have to be the stereotypical evil dog everyone says it is. If you love and train your Chi just right, he will love and respect you for his whole life. Chihuahuas are smart, so they get bored easily and act out. You can solve this by giving them toys that require a bit of finesse. For example, you can freeze a small amount of peanut butter in a KONG toy, and your pooch will be satisfied for hours.

By far, the most phenomenal part about loving a Chihuahua is the symbiotic relationship you two share. Chi puppies love to nest and snuggle on your lap when they are tired or cold. Your chi can feel your love, and return that back to you tenfold- improving your health and helping you to live a longer, happier life.
